Why we do what we do?
Because of you: Scientific studies suggest that more than 80% of the population is lactose intolerant. The effects can include symtoms such as abdominal gas, fatigue, lack of concentration, diarrhea and skin problems to mention a few. Moreover, industrially produced cow’s milk can contain pesticides, hormones, food contaminates, heavy metals and residues of antibiotics as well as other medications.
Because of the Environment: Animal agriculture—with cows at the forefront—creates more greenhouse gases than even the transportation industry making it the number one driver of climate change. It is also a major cause of water pollution, topsoil erosion, oceanic “dead zones” and a host of other ecological problems.
Because of the cows: We tend to think that only dairy produced on large factory farms is inhumane to the animals. Unfortunately, even on small farms cows are treated less than humane. From an economic point of view the cow is a commodity and the only mission of the farm is for the cow to produce milk. For this reason the animals are separated from their calves quickly after giving birth, and repeatedly inseminated throughout their lifetimes. Often the cows live so close to each other in quarters so full of dirt that they get sick and require antibiotics. A veterenarian is not needed to precribe the anount of antibiotic to give. After a lifetime of forced pregnancy, separation from their calves, and being hooked up to machines that suck the milk from their bodies, when they are no longer fertile the animals are sent to the slaughterhouse. Barcelonia love animals and believe that dairy cows deserve a better life, more dignified and free from abuse.
